If you’re buying a home, you’re more than likely going to need to buy homeowners insurance, too. That’s true whether you’re buying a single-family house in Vero Beach or a condo for sale. Lenders require you to buy insurance when you’ve taken out a loan for a home, because it’s their investment, too—and it can serve to protect you in the event of a disaster, catastrophe, or mishap.
What is Homeowners Insurance?
Homeowners insurance is a “safety net,” much like car insurance, that provides you (and your lender) protection against the financial fallout of a disaster.
It’s a package policy, which means that it covers damage to your property and your liability or legal responsibility for issues (like injuries or property damage) that you or your family members cause to other people. In most cases, it also covers damage caused by pets.
Disaster Coverage With Homeowners Insurance
Most disasters are covered under a standard homeowners insurance policy, but there are a few exceptions. You’ll have to buy flood coverage and earthquake coverage separately, but other problems are generally covered (such as fire, tornadoes and hurricanes, and other natural disasters).
