If you're like most people selling a home, you know there are things that have to stay with the house when you sell. But what can you take with you, what do buyers expect to keep, and what's up in the air?

Here's what you need to know.

What Do You Take With You When You Sell Your Home in Vero Beach?

Generally, you have to leave anything that's attached to the house. Your deck, the chandelier in the dining room, and even your basketball hoop that's in the driveway's concrete are typically expected to stay. A good rule of thumb: If it's attached or anchored to the ground, it stays.

Here's a quick run-down.

If you're selling your home, these are generally things that stay behind.

  • Plants and shrubs. These have to stay where they are unless you negotiate otherwise in your contract.
  • Anything that's anchored to the ground. Basketball hoops and swingsets typically stay with the house.
  • Light fixtures. If you're attached to your light fixtures, make sure your real estate agent includes a note in your listing or contract that says they're going with you when you leave.
  • Window treatments. Even if you spent a fortune on custom blinds, you're technically supposed to leave them - they're attached, so buyers expect them to stay.
