The Indian River Citrus Museum: Vero Beach’s Hidden Gem

If you’re buying a home in Vero Beach, you’ll be glad to know that this area has a rich, juicy history – and we have the Indian River Citrus Museum to prove it.

The Indian River Citrus Museum: Vero Beach’s Hidden Gem

The Indian River Citrus Museum, located at 2140 14th Avenue, is one of this area’s little-known gems. Packed with all kinds of fun information about the area and its contributions to the worldwide citrus market, this small museum is a great place to spend an afternoon.

A Peek Inside the Indian River Citrus Museum

Floridians are proud of our citrus history, but few types of oranges have garnered the international fame that Indian River oranges have. In fact, an 1890 report in Blackwood’s Edinburgh Magazine said, “The Indian River Orange is not to be mentioned in the same breath with ordinary oranges.  It is a delicacy by itself, hitherto unknown in the world.”

The museum itself is dedicated to the people and fruit that developed Florida’s billion-dollar industry. You’ll learn about the winter of 1835, when a hard freeze killed every orange in the area except those in one grove (it was on Merritt Island and owned by Douglas Dummett, our first-ever orange mogul). You’ll see exhibits on the pickers who can harvest 20,000 oranges in a day, the marketers who connected Florida with the citrus industry, and the creative farmers and scientists who created new hybrids that took the market by storm.
