Should You Redo Your Kitchen Cabinets to Sell Your Home?

Selling your home is a big deal – and if you’ve already talked to a REALTOR® about it, he or she may have discussed possible updates with you. If you haven’t met with a real estate agent, you’ll want to take a good, objective look around your space to see what might hold your home back from selling quickly.

One of those things might be your kitchen cabinets. But should you redo them to sell?

Here’s what you need to know.

Should You Redo Your Kitchen Cabinets to Sell Your Home?

If your cabinets are in good shape, you might not need to do anything – but you do need to keep in mind that what was “in” a few years ago is unlikely to carry the same weight with buyers than it once did. Talk to your real estate agent about doing a cabinet upgrade; find out if he or she feels that modernizing your kitchen that way will help your home sell faster (or for more money).

Sometimes all it takes is a fresh coat of paint or stain. In fact, even a minor facelift can make a huge impact on how buyers feel in your kitchen. Remember, though, that although painting isn’t rocket science, it does take a lot of patience. You don’t want to lose prospective buyers because your kitchen looks like it wasn’t professionally done, so if you doubt your ability to repaint your cabinets, it’s worth hiring a professional.

What About a Whole Kitchen Remodel?

It’s not often that an entire kitchen remodel is necessary to sell a home. In fact, unless your kitchen has some serious damage or it hasn’t been updated since 1958, you’re probably better off just making minor upgrades. You should always talk to a REALTOR before you make any costly improvements that you believe will help you sell – you don’t want to spend money that you could keep in your pocket.
