Bathrooms always seem to be short on storage space, even if you have built-ins and other storage places - and that means before you list your home for sale, you need to completely declutter your lavatory.

Here's how.

How to Declutter Your Bathroom to Stage Your Home

First things first: Be prepared to be ruthless when you declutter your bathroom. Buyers who come to see your space will open every cabinet and drawer, and they really, really want to see that they'll have plenty of room for their own toiletries - so it's your job to make everything as spacious-looking as possible.

Start with your medicine cabinet. You're on the lookout for:

  • Outdated medications, makeup and other toiletries
  • Toiletries you don't use
  • Items that don't belong there but do belong somewhere else

Move on to your drawers. Rummage through them for:

  • Loose items that you can consolidate into plastic bags (or throw away)
  • Empty bottles, jars and other containers
  • Items that don't belong there but do belong somewhere else

Next, tackle the cabinets. Search for:

  • Items that don't belong (you might be surprised)
  • Loose items you can consolidate or toss
  • Trash - things you'll never use
  • Cleaning supplies that you could store elsewhere

Finally, do the same thing in the shower. Take out:

  • Empty shampoo bottles and soap pumps
  • Toys that don't belong

Once your bathroom is decluttered, you'll be able to clean it thoroughly in preparation for staging - and that's the next step toward selling it quickly and at the right price.
