When you make an offer on a home, you have high hopes - and you know the seller is thinking it over. But what happens if you wait... and wait... and wait? How long can a seller take to respond to an offer?

Here's what you need to know.

How Long Can a Seller Take to Respond to an Offer?

Waiting for a seller to respond to your offer can be excruciating - especially if you really have your heart set on a home. But in theory, a seller could take as long as he or she wanted to respond (or never even respond at all). Really, though, most sellers will make a decision within a few days. When the seller makes a decision, the seller's real estate agent will get in touch with your agent.

There are always special circumstances that could make it take longer for a seller to respond, though. Sometimes a seller is entertaining more than one offer - and he or she has to decide which one to pick - or perhaps your offer was too low, and the seller is trying to determine whether to try to negotiate or reject your offer outright. (And sometimes, sellers are out of town or unreachable - just like everyone else is from time to time.)

What Can You Do if a Seller Hasn't Responded to You?

If you're waiting and waiting for a seller's response, the best thing you can do is talk to your real estate agent. Your agent can contact the seller's agent and ask what's up - and that might get you the answer you need.
