Have You Heard of Spray Foam Furniture?
Dated: September 11 2020
Spray foam furniture? If you’ve never heard of it you’re not alone. After all, spray foam is a polyurethane-based substance that’s used as insulation inside wall cavities, and as a filler for cracks and crevices. So it’s understandable if the concept of spray foam furniture doesn’t quite sit right with you.
Spray foam furniture is a trend that has gone viral on social media platforms like TikTok, YouTube, and Instagram. Once sprayed the foam will expand many times the size of its liquefied form and can be used to create a wide variety of opaque shapes and designs to decorate just about anything—from household items like mirror frames and vases, to wooden sideboards and shelves.
Decorating mirror frames in particular seems to be very popular with spray foamers, who have dubbed frames that have been beautified by the technique as “cloud” or “popcorn” mirrors, since layers of foam can sometimes have the appearance of clumps of popcorn, and the foam tends to be yellowy-beige in color.
The trend has not been met without criticism. One prominent digital creator on YouTube, Drew Scott (not to be confused with HGTV’s Drew Scott), was skeptical about the look and described it as “so strange.” After he saw an instructive TikTok video on making a cloud mirror, however, he became intrigued by the aesthetic and decided to give it a try. In a YouTube video he demonstrated his process for creating a cloud mirror that was outlined in a spray foam zigzag pattern. “I loved, loved, loved the way this mirror turned out,” he said in his video, which has garnered 375,000 views so far.
In Stockholm, Germany a 26-year-old interior designer named Gustaf Westman created an entire foam furniture series. He fabricated his first piece in November 2019. “I had a small wood shelf [at] home that I didn’t have any use for,” he said according to Today.com. “So I just thought if I could upcycle it in any way…and that’s when I tried the foam. So it was kind of a coincidence that [it turned] out cool!”
