3 Things to Stash Away When You're Selling Your Home

If you're like many people, you know that you need to stage your home to sell it - but there are three things you should get rid of, stash away or take out of the house entirely when your house is on the market.

Do you have any of them?

3 Things to Stash Away When You're Selling Your Home

Check out these three things to stash away when you're trying to sell your home - each can leave an unfavorable impression:

  • Political, religious and collegiate decor
  • Collections
  • Personal items

Here's a closer look at each.

#1. Political, Religious and Collegiate Decor

You want to avoid putting off any potential buyers, which means your house has to be completely neutral when you're trying to sell it. Think of your favorite hotel - the decor is neutral, right? That's what your home should be like. Take down anything that might send buyers back out the door - or that would even distract them from noticing your home's finer points.

The bottom line: If anything in the house could spark debate, stash it away.

#2. Collections

Put away your personal collections. Buyers need to be able to envision your home as theirs, but they won't be able to do that if it's filled corner-to-corner with... well, you.

The bottom line: Let buyers use their imaginations by depersonalizing your space.

#3. Personal Items

Even small personal items like refrigerator magnets, trophies or anything that reveals too much about your personality or your lifestyle need to be put away before you show your house. Anything that could stop buyers from seeing your home for what it is - and instead directs them to think about you, the seller - needs to go.

The bottom line: Take out anything that gives clues about you personally.
