3 Tips for Decluttering Kitchen Cabinets to Sell Your Home
Dated: December 12 2019
The kitchen is one of the highlights for many homebuyers. Since a lot of time can be spent in there cooking and socializing, buyers want to be able to picture themselves in it. They will imagine themselves cooking, cleaning, and especially keep an eye out for storage. Even though living in your home while you’re trying to sell it can sometimes be a drag, you’re actually at an advantage! You won’t have to buy anything to put into the cabinets to reflect how they can be used. However, you will need to tidy them up a bit. Keep reading on for the best 3 tips for decluttering kitchen cabinets to sell your home.
Decluttering Kitchen Cabinets to Sell Your Home
Decluttering kitchen cabinets can be a key step in selling your home quickly. It seems like a small task but it has a big impact! Here are the top 3 tips for decluttering your cabinets.
1. Give Away or Box Up Unused Items
If you haven’t used it in a long or you never use it, give it away. That fondue maker you used once four years ago? To the donation box, it goes! If it’s something you use a little more often like Christmas cookie cutters or something sentimental like Grandma’s punch bowl, box them up carefully to be retrieved later. This can also include extra dishes, mugs, etc.
2. Group Items by Type and Allow Space In Between Them
Once you have cleared out everything that is not essential, it’s time to start organizing! Group all similar items together and where it would make sense to use them (i.e., pots and pans near the stove). For example, all plastic containers grouped together and all can goods together. If there are any labels on items, turn them facing forward like they do at grocery stores. Next, and this is the most important step, put space between all of your items. It doesn’t have to be a lot but at least 2-3 inches. This creates the illusion of space and that there is so much space your cabinets aren't crowded.
3. Wipe Down the Insides and Outsides of Cabinets
While you’re in the process of taking things out and moving them around, it would be a good idea to use a damp rag and wipe down every surface, inside and out. If your cabinets are made of wood, you could even use a wood polisher on them to make them look extra shiny. Just giving cabinets a good wipe down can make them look almost new again.
Decluttering Kitchen Cabinets Can Help Sell Your Home
When trying to sell your home, there is a lot to take into account. One thing you can’t overlook is the appearance of your kitchen. Buyers are looking for a lot of storage space with an open, clean environment that they can imagine themselves in. By decluttering your kitchen cabinets before buyers come to look, your kitchen will look cleaner and appear to have ample amounts of storage space. We suggest you not skip over this crucial step if you’re looking to sell your home faster.
