If you're like most people, the inside of a house is the most important part when you're trying to make a decision on which one you should purchase. However, you can't overlook the outside - and here are three things you absolutely need to check before you make an offer.
Before you commit, take a walk around outside with your agent and explore:
Here's a closer look at each.
Many sellers repaint their homes before listing them on the market - but you want to make sure the paint isn't covering up major issues. Look for cracks in the foundation, rotted trim anywhere, an old A/C condenser or an aging roof. These are all expensive fixes, so it's a good idea to check things out to make sure you're not setting yourself up for major bills after you buy.
Get a good look at the deck and porches. Normal wear-and-tear is fine, but you want to zero in on important parts to look for damage. Shake the railing and have a closer look at the deck boards to make sure they're not so old that you'll crash right through them.
Stand outside and just listen. You want to make sure the neighborhood has a noise level you can live with. If it's too loud at odd times - say, in the evening - or if you can hear the main road from the yard, you might have to think twice about whether to make an offer.
