3 More Maintenance Tasks Not to Neglect When Selling Your Home

Potential buyers pay close attention to detail, and deferring maintenance tasks you may think are inconsequential could be hindrances in your path to a sale. Make sure you don’t delay performing these three tasks when your home is on the market.

Maintaining the Yard

Curb appeal is everything. Aside from pictures of your home that house hunters see online, in-person curb appeal is your home’s handshake with buyers and you want it to be love at first sight. If the outside of your property isn’t appealing potential buyers may do a rolling stop and keep on moving. Get them to put the car in park and come to your front door. Keeping a well-maintained yard can do just that.

Maintaining your landscape means keeping the grass trimmed and removing weeds in the summer, and raking leaves and removing dead tree limbs in the fall. If you’ve already vacated your home you may opt to hire a lawn service, or have a trusted friend keep things tidy.

A poorly-maintained yard can cause buyers to pass judgement on the interior of your home before they even step inside...if they decide to.

Cleaning the Gutters  

Even if you don’t have plans to vacate your house, your home’s gutters can be easy to overlook. Gutters that are clogged with leaves and twigs can overflow with rain and cause drainage problems that could eventually damage your home’s foundation. From a cosmetic point of view, buyers who visit your house when it’s raining will see overflowing and puddling water, and that’s not a good look.

Checking the Roof

Be sure to have your roof checked before putting your home on the market. Shingles can detach during heavy winds and violent storms, which can leave portions of your roof inadequately covered.
