Should You Repaint Your House Before You Sell It?

If you’re selling your home in Vero Beach, you may be thinking about repainting its interior or exterior. But should you repaint your house before you sell it? This guide explains.

Should You Repaint Your House Before You Sell It?

Some experts suggest that repainting your home could increase your sales price between 1 and 3 percent – but it’s not always necessary. In fact, in some cases, it could end up costing you more than it brings in at the closing table. So how do you know whether you should repaint your house before you sell it?

Here’s when you should consider painting the exterior:

  1. It looks dull from the road. If your home’s exterior paint doesn’t look fresh, buyers will get the impression that your home appears… well, tired
  2. You see peeling or flaking. If the exterior paint is peeling away or flaking off, it’s time to rejuvenate it with a fresh coat.
  3. The color makes your home look dated. If all the houses in your neighborhood look more modern than yours, it could be time to hire a professional to freshen things up.

But what about the inside? Experts suggest redoing your interior paint if:

  1. You see scratches and scuffs in the paint. Prospective buyers will see scratches and scuffs as a sign that you didn’t properly care for the house, so a fresh coat of paint can help you head off that problem.
  2. You have bright or loud colors on the walls. Buyers prefer to purchase homes that feature neutral colors, even if they don’t particularly love them. You could alienate prospective buyers if your paint doesn’t appeal to a wide range of tastes.
  3. You see peeling or flaking. Like the exterior, peeling and flaking paint inside indicates that a little maintenance is in order.
